Publix Update

I wanted to pass along the information that I have obtained from my visits to Publix in Dothan.

  1. They do take a competitors' coupon within a 45 mile radius. I have used a Target web coupon and a Winn Dixie catalina coupon and had no problem with either. I have not tried a Register Reward coupon from Walgreens, an ECB from CVS, or a $5 on a $25 order coupon from any of the stores that offer these such as Rite Aid or CVS. If anyone has used one of these at the new stores in Dothan, please post a comment and let us know whether or not they will take these.
  2. You may use a manufacturer's coupon and a Publix or competitor coupon together on an item. You cannot use a Publix coupon and a competitor coupon together. A manufacturer's coupon will say "manufacturer coupon" on the top of the coupon.
  3. They do not match other competitors' prices.
  4. On their BOGO items, you do not have to buy two items to receive the lower price.
  5. You may use two coupons on the BOGO items. In other words, if you buy one item and get one item free, you can use two coupons.

I have price checked many items that I normally price at Wal Mart and most of the prices are higher. However, if you match sales with coupons especially when you can stack coupons (use a manufacturer coupon and a store coupon), you can really find some good stockpiling prices.

God speaks in dreams...

I had a dream the other night about the Rapture. I was talking with my youngest son and he slowly started rising in the air and then I started rising in the air. I knew immediately what was happening. The Lord had returned and we were joining Him in the air. I felt excited but sad at the same time. What about my loved ones who will be left behind?

I told my mother about the dream the next morning. Before the end of the day, I had several of my family members calling me asking if they were in the dream and if they were floating toward the sky or not. I honestly felt that I had been thinking about the Lord's return when I went to sleep and that was why I dreamed about it. A few days later I read this scripture in my daily Bible reading:

"For God speaks again and again, though people do not recognize it. He speaks in dreams, in visions of the night, when deep sleep falls on people as they lie in their beds. He whispers in their ears and terrifies them with warnings." Job 33:14-16 NLT

The $5/5 Kraft Coupon has reset!

There is a $5/5 Kraft Coupon for Football Season. When you use this coupon, you also donate $5 toward Feeding America. You should be able to hit your back button to print this twice. Products included are ANY Kraft Cheese or Dairy Products. (Knudsen, Breakstones Cottage Cheese and Sour Cream are excluded in CO, CA and ND).

I used two of these coupons yesterday to buy four packages of Velveeta cheese product (great for hamburger dip!), four packages of Kraft shredded cheese (on sale for $2 at Walmart), one Breakstone's sour cream and one Breakstone's cottage cheese. I am planning on making Crockpot Lasagna sometime this week. However, with my picky eaters I will have to leave out the veggies and boiled eggs. I still think I can make it work.

Thanks Frugal Coupon Living.

What makes up your credit score?

According to FICO, over half of your credit score comes from your payment history and amounts owed. The length of your credit history comes in at fifteen percent of your score while your new credit and types of credit used are at an even ten percent each. While it may seem to have no rational explanation, your credit score is based on an undisclosed formula that we would all like to get our hands on.

The best advice I can give you about your credit score, is to check it often. At AnnualCreditReport.com, you can receive for free a copy every 12 months of your credit report from each of the three credit reporting agencies: Equifax, TransUnion and Experian. You can order a report from one of the reporting agencies every four months to ensure that your report is correct.

How I Save Money on Groceries

Several years ago I saw a special on the Food Network about the website The Grocery Game. I decided to give it a try. It changed my way of shopping forever. About a year ago I decided to cancel my subscription and try to shop on my own. From that experience I have found myself where I am today.
From several years of watching prices, I basically shop for things that I normally would buy and pretty much know what I would pay and match sales and coupons from the local paper. Due to my time and distance, I take these ads to my local WalMart and comp the prices. My local WalMart also takes internet printable coupons which makes a huge difference in your grocery savings. If it is a really good deal, I will stock up on as much as my budget will allow or as many as I have coupons for.
My original purpose of this blog was to post these stockpiling items to help others who were just starting their journey with coupons or even those who do not have time to look for deals and match up coupons. To follow along you will need to obtain the Dothan Eagle paper on Wednesdays which includes all of the ads listed here except for the Piggly Wiggly (Troy and Brundidge) ad which might be delivered to your door or is in the Troy Messenger on Wednesdays. You will also need to purchase a Sunday Dothan Eagle or Montgomery Advertiser for each member of your family. Or if you know someone that will give you the coupon inserts from these papers that would be even better.
Now I do buy most of my Health and Beauty products from Walgreens or CVS. I mainly use Southern Savers for a list of what is on sale at these two stores because I love their shopping list tool. There are so many wonderful sites out there that have the deals at these two drug stores that I felt it would be redundant to post these here. I do post the link to several of these on the side of my blog for those of you who are interested.
If you are new to couponing I would greatly suggest that you read either Shop Smart, Save More by Teri Gault (Founder and CEO of The Grocery Game.com) or The Coupon Mom's Guide to Cutting Your Grocery Bills in Half by Stephanie Nelson (Founder of CouponMom.com). They are both great resources for learning the game of couponing and the two drugstores I have mentioned above.
As I strive to be all the things that God calls me to be-a wife, a Mom, a daughter, a sister, an employee, a friend-I find myself barely having time to gather up my coupons and head to the store. So I apologize for those weeks in the past and those weeks in the future that I miss a week of posting the week's stockpiling deals. I can only promise that I will try to do better.
I hope that this information helps you to discover a love of couponing as I have. I also pray that you will find the resouces you need to help you lower your family's grocery costs.

Where can a guy find an understanding wife?

In my daily Bible reading this morning I read Proverbs 19:14.

"Parents can provide their sons with an inheritance of houses and wealth, but only the Lord can give an understanding wife."

Now, of course, us mothers believe that we have to help the Lord find the understanding wife for our son. But as I read this the Lord reminded me that He has everything under control. All I need to do is turn it over to Him with faith that He will choose the best.

Thank you Lord for always wanting to provide the best for us when we least deserve it.

Kellogg's Pop-Tarts

For those of you who have been waiting for a good deal on Kellogg's pop tarts, listen up. This week Target has the 12-ct pop-tarts on sale for $2. Use this printable coupon for $1.25/3 for a final price of $1.58 a box (a 12-ct box). I will be matching this price at my local Wal-Mart to snag a sweet deal on pop tarts.

Now if they will only have the blueberry muffin flavor in the 12-ct box. That is my youngest son's favorite.

Pantry Organization -Before and After

I converted my upstairs linen closet into a stockpiling pantry. As you can see my family really loves Del Monte cut green beans and Bush's baked beans. So I made sure I stocked up when they were on sale. I have been eying those can organizers and recently found some cardboard ones you can order that are not as expensive as the plastic or metal. I used those to organize my canned goods in a way that is better for rotating.

I purchased the smaller size of organizer since my cabinets were not deep enough for the larger one. All of my regular and small size cans would fit. Since I buy the larger cans of baked beans, they would not fit.

My local Wal-Mart has the the Kraft mac & cheese boxes on sale for $2.50 for a 5-pack. With a $1/2 printable coupon, I was able to obtain them for $.40 a box. I purchased the Velveeta shells and cheese at Walgreens last week with the $3 RR when you purchase $10 deal. I ended up with ten boxes for $1.20 each. They are on sale at Wal-Mart for $1.75 right now and I have seen them as low as $1.50 at some stores.

Now I am waiting for the Velveeta block cheese to go on sale with a coupon to go along with my Rotel.

Kellogg's cereal recall

Kellogg's has issued a recall on several of their cereals including certain boxes of Fruit Loops, Apple Jacks, Corn Pops and Honey Smacks. Go here for a complete list of which products are included and a phone number to call and request coupons for replacement.

Since I have probably 25 boxes of cereal with almost all being Kellogg's, I did find five boxes included in the list. I have called the number and had to leave my information. I will be calling back tomorrow to verify that my information was received. You will need to call between 8:00 am - 8:00 pm to talk to a real person. They did not state which time zone this was.

Thanks Southern Savers.

I made 65 cents at CVS!

I visited my local CVS on Friday to purchase several items. As soon as I entered the store, I scanned my card and was happy to find a $5 off of a $40 purchase coupon. Now I had planned to purchase my items in 3-4 transactions to lower my out of pocket expense. But when I saw that coupon I thought about my co-worker Jennifer who always receives similar coupons. When I asked her how she was able to obtain the coupons, she told me that she thought because she always used the ones that printed, she repeatedly received them. So, I decided to give it a try. So I purchased all of the items above in one transaction. My total before coupons was $41.02. After my coupons which are listed below, I paid out of pocket $14.35 and received ECBs of $15- a profit of $.65! My purchases included the following:

(4) Nivea body wash $4.88 x 4 - less (3) $4 coupons and (1) BOGO coupon from All You magazine
(1) Venus Breeze razor $9.99 - less $2 coupon
(2) Reach toothbrush value packs $3.99 x 2 - less $1 coupon and BOGO coupon
(2) Dawn detergent $.97 x 2 - less (2) $.25 coupons
(1) Mountain Dew 20oz (not shown-did not make it home)

Less $.50 coupon from card scan and $5/$40 order coupon from card scan.

Total=$14.35 received $5 ECB, $6 ECB, and $4 ECB

To be honest, I was not expecting that outcome because I very seldom purchase everything in one transaction. Luckily for me, this time it worked!

Thanks Jennifer.

Shopping trip to CVS

Well, it is really not my shopping trip. But my coworker, Jennifer, did a super job at her recent trip to CVS that I wanted to share. She purchased $97 of items for only $11. She did have to pay $29 out of pocket but received $18 in ECBs to be used as cash on another purchase. Here's a link to her post which has a picture of all of the items she bought.

Way to go Jennifer!

Budget Update

Monthly Update

Well, for the month of March I was over budget by $136.68. I spent $636.68 on $1,081.06 worth of groceries. I saved $198.82 with coupons during the month. When I looked at my total saved from coupons for the quarter I was shocked. I have saved $512.91 the first three months of the year with coupons. What could you do with $512 right now?

I am a little disappointed in myself for going over budget this month. I did have several things going on during the month that probably would account for this-spring break, school project, etc.

Hopefully, the month of April will have great sales and super coupons so we all can stay under budget.

Budgeting 101-Step 2_Ready, Set, Go

This is Step 2 of my posts concerning how to set up and use a budget. If you missed step one, just click here.

Now that you have an idea of how much you are spending in each category, now it is time to formalize your budget. I started with a spreadsheet and listed down the first column all of the categories that I had found in my search of where my money was going. Leave the first four rows blank. It may be a bill that you do not pay but once a quarter or once a year, but it needs to have a row. Since I have teenagers driving, I have a separate line for each son's gas and lunch. I have a set amount in my budget that I will contribute to their gas fund and any gas over that, they have to fund. It roughly comes out to the gas they need to go back and forth to school, any trips outside of that they cover the costs.

Next, across the top of the page, in column 2 list the first payroll date for the month. In the third column, list the next payroll date. For example, if you get paid twice a month, you would have two columns to the right of your first column listing where your money is going. If you and your spouse get paid on a separate week, you may have up to four columns for payroll dates. Personally, even though we get paid during the same week, I like to have a column for my pay and a column for my husband's pay the first part of the month. The second half of the month, I combine.

Now, start at the beginning of the month and work out which bills need to be paid from which payroll. This way, when you get paid you automatically know which bills need to be paid out of the check. I personally like to be one payroll ahead but it did take me awhile to work myself up to that. If you get paid twice a month, you will have two extra payrolls each year. At that time you can pay everything ahead at that time if you so desire.

On the third row under the payroll date, I list the amount of take home pay I will receive. Then I go down the list on the left and fill in the amount under the payroll date that the bill needs to be paid from. For example, if the electricity bill needs to be paid by the 10th, then I will need to pay that bill from my first payroll. If your first payroll of the month does not occur until after the 10th of the month, then that bill must be paid from the previous month's second payroll. According the Dave Ramsey, you should have every dollar spent (budgeted) before the month begins. So this process should take place at the end of the previous month. That way, as soon as you receive your pay, you know actually where each dollar should be spent.

Now I like to have a formula at the bottom of the page that will take my income and subtract each bill and let me know if I am over or short on what I want to pay out of that payroll. It also helps me know if I need to move some bills from one payroll to another if I have more due at the first of the month than at the end of the month. For those items that you only pay once a year, such as taxes or insurance, list them under the payroll date that has the extra income. Then that week, move that amount to your savings each month for that quarterly or annual bill.

Remember, you will never have a perfect budget so do not become discouraged. It is best to have a little bit of cushion built in to take care of those little uh-oh's that will occur.

Stay tuned for Step 3.

Budget Update

Monthly Update:

For the month of February I came in at $9.04 under my $500 budget. I purchased $798.51 of groceries for only $490.96. I saved $158.06 with coupons. My weekly average decreased from $123.51 in the month of January to $122.74 in February. It did not increase as much as I had hoped. Although this last week in February I purchased $31 of dog food at Target (on sale with coupons @ $6.99 each) and Zyrtec for my allergy sensitive hubby. So overall, I feel good that I came in under budget.

We have spring breaks in March which mean I need more food in the house, I am praying I can stretch my $500 to cover that as well.

The register rewards used were from last week's sales. I had to use the Orbit gum as fillers which is fine since I can't seem to buy enough gum for my gum chewing crowd. Walgreens will not let you use RR unless you have the same number of items as you do coupons or RR (Walgreens ad coupons do not count).

Dirt Cake

This is my youngest son's favorite dessert. He always asks for a Dirt Cake for his birthday.

1 12 oz Cool Whip

1 8 oz cream cheese

1 cup powdered sugar

1/2 cup butter

2 large vanilla instant pudding packages

3 cups of cold milk

1 teaspoon vanilla

1 large package OREO cookies

Crush cookies until fine, divide crumbs in half. Cover bottom of 9x13 dish with 1/2 crumbs. In large bowl, cream butter and cream cheese until fluffy. Add sugar and cool whip. Mix well-do not overbeat. In a separate bowl mix pudding, milk and vanilla together well. Combine both mixtures and pour over crumbs. Sprinkle rest of crumbs on top. Refrigerate 12 hours or freeze 1-2 hours.

Today is just a snapshot!

"The righteous face many troubles,
but the Lord rescues them from each and every one.
For the Lord protects them from harm-
not one of their bones will be broken!" Psalm 34:19-20

As I read this verse this morning, I thought about the times these last few weeks that I had spent unnecessary time worrying about this or that. Those nights I found myself up at 2:30 in the morning with my mind just racing with what ifs were useless moments of worry.

Today is just a snapshot but the Lord has my whole life in view.

Snow in South Alabama!

Can you believe it? We have snow in south Alabama. I measured four inches at my house. It is pretty but I sure do not like to drive in it. The school and college were closed today but my husband and I had to work. Driving home at noon was pretty scary to someone like me who has never driven in it.
